Welcome

Welcome to Ms. Anderman's math blog.  This blog will help families stay up-to-date on what we are studying in math.  I will also post additional information that I feel will help us both support your student's learning in math this year.  It was great to see so many families at Back to School Night.  For those of you not able to attend, please check out this handout that gives you some basic information about my class.

Last week we began looking at strategies students can use for solving 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems.  Students are working on using arrays to model multiplication.  As you support your student at home you could try asking the following questions when they tackle a problem:

1.  What do you already know about these numbers that might help you?
2.  Can you put these numbers into a story context?
3.  How many groups of what?
4.  Does your answer seem reasonable?

After a student has a conceptual understanding of multiplication, it is extremely important that they master basic multiplication facts.  If your student is still in the process of learning these facts you can check out this overview of the sequence and strategies used for learning these facts.  Please continue to practice these facts.
